Andante
English | Español | Français | Português
Andante is a sound installation that gives form to the rhythm of a city’s walkers. Solitary shoes, animated by mechanical devices, rise and strike their bases, composing a rhythmic polyphony inspired by the footsteps of the inhabitants of Québec City.
Based on the walking speeds of several participants, the installation generates a pulsating score that makes audible the human presence in its most everyday motion: walking.
Evoking urban activity, protest marches or aimless wandering, Andante sculpts a sonic landscape where each shoe dialogues with the others, reflecting the diversity of ways of living in, moving through, and experiencing the city.
Each shoe was lent by its owner, whose walk was tracked to determine their average pace — the number of steps per minute.
With the walkers of Québec: Alice B, Alice G, Alexandre, Amélie, Anie, Caroline, David B, David G, Diane, Éléonore, Élie-Anne, Madeleine, Martin, Myriam, Pierre, Raphaelle, Rémy, Simon Olivier, Sylvie, and Vincent.
